Ask AANW: Is There Anything Wrong With Having A Long Engagement?

Question:

My boyfriend just proposed but we have already discussed that we don’t want to have the wedding for another two years is there something against having a long engagement.

Congrats on your engagement!!! He loved it and he put a ring on it!!! 🙂 So back to question at hand.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a long engagement. Matter of fact, contrary to what you think, 2 years is not considered long. I have seen some people stay engaged for 4 to 5 years. There are obviously underlying reasons for this from distance, career fulfillment, finances, education amongst others.

The only advice I can give is that you hold your ground. In our culture, people expect you to be married within a year of getting engaged. You’ll have people who’ll ask you numerous times about why you are not getting married next year to those who’ll nearly persuade you to get it done immediately. Whatever the case maybe, just be true to yourself! The engagement period is also a time for you to reflect about what lies ahead, get to know your partner while having ample time for wedding planning.

Congrats again!!! Let us know if you have any other questions!
